Description (May 8, 2006)

The Red List - The World Conservation Union, through its Species Survival Commission (SSC) assesses the global conservation status of species in order to highlight those taxa threatened with extinction and promote their conservation. The Red List of Threatened Species provides taxonomic, conservation status and distribution of information. It is committed to providing the world with the objective, scientifically based information on the current status of globally threatened biodiversity.

Curriculum Integration

  • Research and collect population extinction data and compare biodiversity trends and ecosystem function to this data. Use a spreadsheet to collect data and present in graph format.
  • Evidence of extinction is difficult because appropriate surveys are still required to confirm that the last individual has died. Research and list possible extinctions and address this quote: The basic paradox of “documenting” extinctions is that absence of evidence is not necessarily evidence of absence".
  • View and address the information shown in the Threatened Species Photo Gallery
