Description (December 12, 2005)

Zoom into Maps - This website introduces historical maps from the American Memory collections and represents only a fraction of the 4.5 million digitized map treasures of the Library of Congress' Geography and Map Division. At this site, you will find not only a sampling of a variety of maps in the collection, but also activities to help in analyzing maps and what can be learned from historic maps.

Curriculum Integration

  • What are maps and what do they do? What common characteristics do they have? Use the Graphic Organizer to analyze and answer.
  • Maps illustrate change over time. Research and use a series of maps to show this. Use PowerPoint to present.
  • Pictorial maps use symbols or pictures to represent a theme. Depict an era in literary history and create a pictorial map. Use the electronic whiteboard to create an interactive presentation.
