Rip Current Safety - The information on this site from NOAA is about the science of waves and rip currents. It includes their formation, the types of rip currents, rip current safety, forecasts, rip tides, stories, questions and answers and diagrams and media.

Classroom Integration

  • Draw diagrams showing when and where rip currents form.
  • Research the parameters of a Surf Zone Forecast. Describe the forecast process.
  • What precautions should swimmers take to safeguard themselves when swimming in the ocean? Create a chart to present to the class. Include a picture or diagram showing how to escape from a rip current.
  • Print out the signs and brochures available on the site and post for display.
