Description (August 1, 2005)
NeMO:
New Millennium Observatory - The NeMO Project is a long-term
study of Axial Seamount, an underwater active volcano in the mid-ocean
ridge system off the coast of Oregon and Washington. The research
activities at NeMO provide an extraordinary educational opportunity
focusing on a long term sea expedition and will enable students
to learn about the interactions between geology, chemistry, and
biology on a dynamic part of the mid-ocean ridge system. Views of
the Axial volcano, black smoker vents, unusual sea life forms, mid-ocean
ridges, and lava flow can be observed through video and computer
animation and provide a rewarding learning experience.
Curriculum Integration
- A variety of curriculum
materials are available which include lesson plans, resources,
and videos.
- With the electronic whiteboard the class can participate in
a dive with a remotely operated vehicle to the seafloor and explore
the Axial Seamount active submarine volcano. Dive!
is an interactive experience using video and computer animation
that allows exploration of black smoker vents, unusual life forms
and newly erupted lava flows.
- Using the electronic whiteboard, explore the NeMO
seafloor observatory and visit one of six virtual sites for
an animated tour with links to video clips.
