videoconferencing

Videoconferencing technology allows two or more people at different locations to see and hear each other at the same time. Computer applications may also be shared for collaboration. This communications technology allows for new opportunities for instruction, professional development and collaboration. These may include formal instruction, connections with guest speakers or museums and cultural institutions, school-to-school collaborations, professional activities, and community events.

Initiating a videoconference session is a lot like placing a telephone call. After you connect, you see the other person in color video and may be able to transfer files or collaborate via options such as document sharing or white boarding. The video frame rate varies from 5-30 frames per second, depending on the connection, hardware and software.

Videoconferencing is one form of distance learning or education which employs electronic media linking instructors and students who are not together in a classroom. Online education is another form of distance learning.

BENEFITS
While it is too early to determine long-range effects of VC connections on student learning, initial research has already shown that they do:

  • Heighten motivation
  • Improve communication and presentation skills
  • Increase connection with outside world
  • Increase depth and retention of learning
  • Improve tolerance of diversity by linking students from varied social, cultural, economic and experiential backgrounds

The following websites offer specific examples of how educators are using videoconferencing, as well as some general resources for additional information:
